How Is Creation Creating Itself?

Follow-up from J.K. - Just wanted to run something past you for some clarity. I was in the shower (I do my best thinking under water!) and was mulling over an interesting thought. Our whole world is based on the premise that there exists an objective reality "out there" independent of our observation. Of course, this is not provable because it is only though our thoughts and mental images that we know something. Since we're not present to hear the proverbial tree fall in the forest, it can't make a sound...independent of a "hearer."

Yes: Ultimately the emptiness asks WHAT tree? Your sharing is quite right as a concept that points to the non-conceptual absence of any hearer of what arises as energy and sounds like stuff heard.

Isn't that true of our self as well?

Of course.

We assume there is an "I" independent of thought just like the tree. But upon closer scrutiny, without the "I" thought...there is no "I". When "we" are absorbed in an activity, say for example, building a model airplane or playing a musical instrument...there is no "I" thought, and consequently, no "I". It's not until we "wake up" (love the paradox) and say to ourselves, "Oh, I'm building the model" or "I'm playing the musical instrument" that this "I" reappears.

That ain’t “waking up”. THAT is “going back to sleep”! But ONLY if that I is TAKEN ON BOARD as “me-apart-from-other”. There is NO problem with the appearance of an I so long as that appearing and subsiding I is seen to be merely a pointer to what IS – the Wholeness of That which cognizes all that appears and is not actually separate from that appearance. NOT TWO.
The “I: thought is equally a manifestation of TheOne as is the Silence and Stillness of Emptiness all is That, arising as Being-Awareness-Lovingness. That Being NEVER changes. That is the TRUE Eternal Stateless State.

It seems to me just as plausible an explanation that we (Consciousness) are creating our own reality as we observe it...millisecond by millisecond...constantly hitting the "refresh" button. And, of course, that can also be said for the mind-made "I" we also claim is objective reality. Feel free to affirm, dismantle...

Very accurate pointers, clearly coming form direct experiencing of thae actuality mof no-person. The thought I or me is NO problem so long as the thought is not believed to be what you are any longer. So in the view from Here your expression is spot on.

Why?

Creation, the universe, is because the sense of being arose in the One. You are, for the very same reason. In this book we have talked about beingness - being what you are. There comes a time when even that pointer, that concept, can be dropped.

Consider the analogy that in sleep, prior to a dream, there is a void or emptiness – no thing. Then the dream appears. It arises spontaneously and nothing is actually happening. So it is for the One. In the beginning there was the One, at peace with itself. In the One, the sense of being arose, and just as the nightly dream spontaneously arises, so creation appears.

The One knows space, time, and creation to be unreal against the One reality which it is. As the source, the One knows itself as the sole reality even while loving the appearance of beingness. The One is loving to be, and knowing that, in truth, nothing is really happening.

To further the analogy, creation is a dream of the One and the dream is not separate from the One just as the nightly dream is not separate from the organism dreaming. Creation could come to an end at any moment and the One, that is the single reality, would remain – nothing would be missed.

Because no one is born and no one dies, just as in a nightly dream, the suffering that appears to take place within creation is not real. All the events of creation are not real. They are, as we have discussed, just appearances within the One. As Nisargadatta Maharaj said,

"A man who moves with the earth will necessarily experience days and nights. He who stays with the sun will know no darkness. My world is not yours. As I see it, you all are on a stage performing. There is no reality about your comings and goings. And your problems are so unreal!"

Nisargadatta Maharaj was speaking from the perspective of the One, not the mind. If you imagine your nightly dream for a moment, knowing that it is just a spontaneous creation of the mind, could you not say the same words about the characters in your dream that Nisargadatta Maharaj said about the appearance of the world and the characters in it?

All of creation is appearance within the One. The appearance does not touch the One. The One loves to be, and so the appearance is. There is no further purpose than that. The appearance exists within the peace of the One and does not disturb that peace. You, as the person, are just an illusion or a dreamed appearance. You, the True Self, That which is present-aware, that which is the beingness, is likened to the drop in the ocean. Taste the drop and you know the taste of the whole ocean. Know the Self and you know the One for there is no difference and no separation from That.

The sense of presence, the sense of beingness arose in what you are and so follows the appearance of the person.

The peace that is the Source is your peace. The love that is the Source is your love. The timeless, spaceless, presence that is the One is you. There is nothing that the mind can say about it. There is nothing you need to do to achieve what you already are, nothing that needs to be acquired to be more of what you already are, and nothing that needs to be improved upon. For the ocean and the drop, there is nothing else. There is no separation between the drop and the ocean except in the mind.

Consider again the words from Chapter 12: “Stay with that which lovingly allows for everything to appear in peace that cannot be disturbed. Allow it to show you the depth of its void and the fullness of its emptiness.”

The only thing standing in the way of clearly seeing what is being pointed to are the false ideas you have about who you are. These false ideas are easily dissolved with investigation and all that remains is the reality of the One, just as it has always been. Nothing new is added – you already are what you seek.

The Origin Of “I Am”

In the last chapter we discussed how creation came into existence. Prior to that, when in the One, the sense of being arose - with it arose the sense of “I Am.” This is why your own beingness is such a clear pointer to your ultimate true nature. The sense of being is the source of the thought “I Am”.

The beingness that is sensed by the mind is the same beingness of the One. Some point by saying that there is only One and not even that. This is pointing to that which is the One prior to the sense of beingness. The sense of beingness is the very root cause of all appearance. The One, the Source, or God is so far removed from what the mind can conceive or perceive that even the presence of beingness is superficial and a mere enjoyment of the One.

The mind however is confused by this sense of beingness because it cannot grasp it. Because it cannot grasp it the mind chooses to ignore it or just overlooks it to the best of its ability and settles on the idea that “I Am.” The thought “I Am” is only a reflection of the One’s experience of itself. The mind, as we have seen, is a part of the creation that arose from the One. The mind, being dual, senses the beingness and sees the appearance of creation. In that lies the illusion of separation.

In order to break the spell of separation one only needs to realize that the concept of “me”, the idea that “I Am,” is just a thought pointing back to that beingness and to see that without that beingness - nothing would be. To see that even without that sense of beingness, you are.

In that presence nothing else is needed, required, wanted, or happening. In that presence, in the beingness that you are, lays the ultimate peace – you are that.

Don’t Miss The Simplicity Of This

Something sees these letters and sees the forms called words, and that same ever-present something sees the space between the letters and the words, the screen of the computer that allows these to appear, and the space in which computer, body, knower, and seer, are all arising out of nowhere (now here). That Space of Being Awareness effortlessly holds and allows it all to be as it is. No resistance. Eternally Presencing Reality. Did you overlook all these spaces and the Space-Awareness that allows it all to appear? Right here and now are you overlooking the Being-Presence that allows the seeing of the body? The observing of the I thought that appears? What is seeing? Being sees and sees the appearance of a self, reading. That Being is what You are. It takes NO time or effort to BE. This, Being-Eternally-existing, is what you are. Don’t believe the voice in your head that tells you that you are a thing that can suffer and die. Being as you are means abandoning all identities once and forever. You are That - Being, and nothing else.

You Are Not A Feeling, A Sensation, Or A Concept

See that your real nature is simply Being, alive as Presence, right now. And the search is over. The Self is already realized. Just see that the I AM that You are is NOT a thought, a fixed locale, or form in time. This Seeing-Knowing releases you from the false belief in a self-centered identification with the body, mind, or anything else! Life goes on, but the false fixation of Being-I-AM on any "thing", has been severed.

When the mind is looked into with naked awareness it is crystal clear that there is NO doer to be found anywhere. The idea of an I that is a doer is but a passing fancy. Seeing that a thought is NOT who you are is Self-Knowledge. That's all there is to "get".

What are you?

Who do you take yourself to be? What is it that you understand your self to be? Are you separate from the Whole? Are you a solid entity, real and permament and apart from others and life itself? If you believe that to be so, here are some questions for that “you” which you “know yourself to be.”

Where did this thing you think you are come from? What is it made of? What makes it appear and know, feel, believe and assert its independence from All That Is?

What does this "you" consist of? How and why did it get born? DID it get born? This "idea of “me” ... is it real? Solid? Does it actually do, think, feel, act?” Look at this.

Where is this “me” you are convinced is what you are? Exactly where? What is its home, its location? Is it an "it" at all? Ponder. Ask yourself, do I exist? What is this that exists? What wakes that up in the morning? What puts that to sleep at night?

Prior To Consciousness ... What IS? Prior To Wakefulness ... What Are You?

This Is A Natural Functioning

Q: Logically, I cannot be anything I can think. If I can think it, I cannot be it. Even the mind can see this. So thinking about this blows my mind for awhile, then I have to get back to work and in a jiffy am back to (the habit of) believing I'm these thoughts! Amazing.

Believing "I am these thoughts?" Is that true? The real test as far as I can tell is, are you suffering with these beliefs in thoughts? Or is there just a naturally functioning brain that is able to do its work without a concern like "am I doing it right?" In the absence of these me-myself worry-overlays the brain thinks and acts naturally, perfectly well, as Consciousness operates through it and all is well as work is done by no doer. Get what I am pointing to? No problem with thoughts and beliefs so long as there's no suffering! The "me" of a natural functioning organism is not a problem, not at all.

But then who or what IS this "I" you say you are several times? And "my?" Who owns the thoughts? Who owns the work? IS there an owner?? Seeing through the I and seeing that what you are is the Aware-Presence that the one-letter label "I" points to is what we offer here...

Original Sin? Ignoring The One True Self

D.S. Writes, I awakened to the nondual a little over 2 years ago while in India. Life is much simpler when there is know one that takes it seriously anymore. I joke with people saying that the meditative God seeker named D. went to India but never came back; he is probably still there seeking. I wanted to share with you a thought that came to me a couple of weeks ago...it has to do with original sin, most Christians have the concept that everyone is sinner when born. I feel what Jesus met by that was some thing totally different. To me the one sin if you even want to call it that but i will in this context, is overlooking the Self that we truly are. Karma can only affect you when you identified with body or even the soul. Suffering only hurts when there is a someone to suffer…

"My view" on this is that "original sin" (which many translate as "mistake" or "to miss the mark") is simply, as you say, erroneously overlooking the natural ever-present Being-Awareness which alone is what is Real. I would add that taking the thought "I am" to be "me" - seemingly displacing the nondual Space-Like I AM of Non-conceptual Being - to be the key mistake in this illusory world-appearance... believing "I am" a thought, a name, a form, a body, IS the mistake and when that is what we take the self to be, suffering is inevitable. Seeing that the belief is false ends the confusion and leaves what already always IS ... Being-Awareness-Peace.

Anyway, all sounds right on. No D.S., no suffering! This is Being, Home in the Heart Land. Thanks for sharing that!

Knowing Without A "Knower"

S.M. asks, - I've been thinking about the "cloud of the unknown," and I really don't understand how one could know something certainly, without doubt, something that is definitely true. Thus, nothing can be known at all, everything is complete unknowing because I can't say with certainty that one thing is more certain than another, everything is completely unknown.

Do you mean “The Cloud Of Unknowing,” the old Christian mystical book? I will assume so for the response here…but first. WHAT is this “I” “thinking”? Where IS that “I”? Is it real, solid, eternal? Or merely a thought that comes and goes? What NEVER changes? Only what does NOT come and go is Real. What is THAT?

Keep it simple. While essentially your understanding of not knowing is correct, there IS one thing that IS known beyond any doubt! The Self. This Self-Knowledge is the dispeller of self-ignorance. Then, as NOW, there is ONLY Being and all else IS unknowable. As to know a thing requires a false separation into a knower, a thing known. Know-ING IS the Real … that’s is what is referred to by the great word-pointer, I AM THAT. So: You DO absolutely know that you exist! No one can assert, “I am not.” I AM MUST be here first. Seeing this, that cloud of unknowing is dispelled. Clear seeing is knowing I AM BUT not knowing I am this thing called “me” or that thing called “the body” or the other thing called “my thought my feeling etc.” To repeat a core pointer, this knowing is devoid of knower/known. That is the tru stateless state … the experiencing, living, aliveness itself. This is what You are.

Q: At first I thought that many concepts could come out of this. "I don't know what I desire, I don't know who I am, I don't know what is best for me." I thought a lot of accepted Buddhists concepts could come out of this, but then I thought that, because there is complete unknowing, one could never know how to implement any of this, and that one couldn't know how to help another. Killing someone may or may not be better than saving them. Then on top of that, can this unknowing be known? And if it can't does that mean I ignore this concept altogether. Any pointers? (no pun intended)

See how the response above does. Everything happens and the idea of an I that thinks and a me that does (killing or saving) IS the false identity asserting itself as a real personal do-er of actions. Who IS that one? What drives that happening of thoughts and stories? Where is that I that is taken to be what you are? This is where the Great Question that you never answer is of huge power: WHO AM I? WHERE IS this “ME?”

You ARE and that is Real. What you are is THIS … Only Being, Oneness. What is UNREAL is the “separation” of knower and known. Seeing this once and for good ends the search forever.

"How Do 'I' Know There's No I?"

Follow-up from S.M. ... Okay, so how can "I" know certainly that impermanence is absolute? How can I even know that unknowing is absolute. "I" guess if all this speculation ends in this, that everything is unknowing and that this is also unknowing, it isn't very useful to continue speculating. But how can "I" wisely act on compassion and help "others" if everything concerning "others" is unknowing, how do "I" know that what "I" think is helping them is hurting them. If all is unknowing what can "I" do wisely.

It is not that there is something OR nothing that you can do. There is no "you!" NO "I". So all concern about that I and what it can or cannot do is based on the false assumption that there is an I with some ability to control ... to do or not do anything.

So what can "you" do? Where is this doer? Answer the second question and you'll laugh at the first question.

How can it be known certainly that there is no I?

By looking.

It seems that clearing seeing or hearing isn't a self, and everything "I" do seems to be from desires, and it has become normal for "me" to act on desire, and desires seem to be impersonal, very separate from a "self." But in any case, what is compassion, is it just another desire. When "I" begin to realize intuitively how all desire is from ignorance, will there be compassion. How can compassion be acted upon if one is completely uncertain of how to help?

Who asks this? Find out.

Well, there is no self that thinks, thinking is separate from this "self," so if this self is not awareness, and can't be separate from awareness, there is no self. So ultimately, no one asks the question, there is no question, everything is dependent on everything, So what "I" think, or what is experienced as thinking may or may not be indicative of anything real. "I" don't know who asks. Even this thought of compete unknowing is unknown, so I don't know if don't know... if I don't know. It goes on and on. Complete unknown.

What are you up to here? Do you simply want to engage in a debate? If so go join a "spiritual group" that loves to do that. There are plenty of those places. This place is NOT one of them. I have NO interest in that. I have answered your questions with offers of ways of looking that end doubt, confusion, and psychological suffering. If you are suffering and want to sincerely explore that in ways that can END that suffering, I am here for you. But I have NO interest in debating concepts.

Listen to the madness of your ego. “I want to know how I can KNOW there no I!”

My sense of you is that you are merely debating esoteric concepts and not really hearing the Message. All words are within beingness, I am the knower of beingness, I blame no one in the world, people are poor but the poorest are the rich, they want more and more. Ask "The Thinker" in you: "Who Are You"??

S.R. asks, Nisargadatta uses the words,’ witness, Beingness, and I am.' Do they refer to the same state of manifestation or consciousness, which Maharaj calls the only capital available? Further, Maharaj advocates to remain in the state of witness, called by the other two names. Is this the first step of ascent from the present identified state of the ego, identifying itself with a particular of the totality, which he calls vyakti, which is individuality or ego, translated into English?

There is no “ascent” from ego. In TRUTH There IS no “ego!” So how can there be any “ascent”? This is a story told by thoughts that are happening in your head. You take the story to be both you (“the “I” that thinks it thinks, that is believed as being the do-er of thinking) and “about you” – “my” life, “my” ego (or “the ego.”)

Where outside of thought IS this “ego”? Look for it. Where is it? Can you ever actually FIND such a thing? Ask that “thinker”, WHO ARE YOU? Where did you come from?

Maharaj says that on attention being given to the witness or Beingness, the consciousness which is time-bound disappears for want of a prop.

Yet who would do that? Where is “the one” – a self – that can or could ever DO that? The seeker is the thought “I am” – I seek therefore I am” is the trap of the conceptual wheel of time-identity chasing its own tail.

In empirical language he calls this the food body, the consciousness for want of food dying and merging in Awareness which is not aware of itself as against the consciousness of duality aware of something external. Even here at the stage of Beingness, I think, there is no duality of knower and the known, which exists only at a lower level of the individual ego.

WHO says, “I think!?” WHO wants to parse some poetry spoken in a past story (dead words of dead guru and dead seeker!) ??… you are NOT that seeker-mind present in a loft in Mumbai decades ago, are you? So … WHO wants to understand and “get it right?” The seeker you believe yourself to BE! And the seeker is nothing but a thought of a "me" that wants to get and hold and own some intellectual understanding. There is NO “correct" understanding or interpretation! ALL interpretations are false. And more to the pointless point, ALL so-called “teachings” are at best pointers only to That which IS and Beyond Description.

Would somebody expatiate on this confirming the correctness of my understanding of the teachings of Maharaj?

All utterances out of the mouth of both the ignorant “seeker” and the realized “sage” are utterly ultimately false! So your understanding is neither correct nor incorrect. It is irrelevant to what is pointed at … Being, naked Awareness, One-Without-A-Second. This is NON-Duality, beyond all ideas and concepts and ultimately, understanding IS “the booby prize!”

Stop trying to figure this out and just ask that thought-story, “Who are you that wants to know?” Who are you? WHO? (No answer is true!)

Chapter 5. I Have Destroyed Your Ego!

Once upon a time there was a Great Master who had a few students who lived in an ashram with him. One day, a student who had been “In search of The Self” and seeking final enlightenment and liberation came to the Master and bowed, and said, “Master, my ego is driving me crazy with desires and suffering. Please help me destroy this horrid ego!”

The Master (who knew there was no Master, no Teaching, no Path, and no Goal,) smiled and said, “Go and sit in your room and hunt very carefully and thoroughly for your ego. As soon as you find it, bring it here and I will happily destroy it for you.”

Delighted that at last “The goal is near,” the student retired to his quarters and began the process of seeking the ego.

Some time passed, and one evening the student again approached the Master, a look of deep disappointment and despair on his face, tears in his eyes, and said, "Oh master, I have searched and searched and I cannot fulfill your command, I have failed you, my master. I cannot find the ego anywhere!”

The Master smiled, gazed into the students eyes and said loudly, “You SEE! I have destroyed your ego!”

Stunned, the student fell back on his heels, then it dawned on him. He shouted, “There never WAS any 'ego'. It does not exist! How could I have believed in a ghost?!” And with that he burst out laughing, and laughed and laughed and laughed. The Master simply smiled and said, “So It Is. Welcome Home, dear boy. All is resolved in the Unborn. Never trade the Unborn for false beliefs and empty meaningless thoughts!”

What Is

Any words written or spoken here will be misleading. Everything points to nothing and is made of that same no thing.

This message is not about mental clarity or any sort of “knowing.” There is no assertion of path or practice, nor any promise of attainment or some arrival someday at a special state of peace, stillness, or silence.

The message is, there is only what is, happening, and this is happening to no one.

There is nowhere to go and nothing to become. All there is, is … everything, Being. There is NO actual “eternal state.” Those words are simply a pointer to no thing.

There is only timeless Being and in that timeless Being, there arises the appearance of separateness and it seems there is an “individual” who then seeks for “Wholeness.” But there is ONLY Already Wholeness and so the seeking denies that seeker his or her “goal,” because that “goal” is what already IS.

Being is all there is. Your are neither That nor not That. There is no you.

That is all there is. No one gets That.

A Friend Writes, Really enjoyed your conference call. I have lately been asking myself the question on the I Am That dvd where Maharaj says. The knowing that you are, on what does it depend?........... (Its really mind boggling.) ....... Nobody investigates on this, ..... Beyond the body mind, no one investigates........... ?????? Without depending on anything, find out, what are. .....

Yes.

I KNOW "I AM." But I can never know HOW I know I am.

In my experience, I must find out that I Am in order to discover that before I Am, I Am NOT. Then I must see that the I is merekly a thought arising out of nowhere and going back to that same nowhere and that only that nowhere is the actuality ... that lets me see that I am NOT. Therefore the mind must conclude, I am ONLY because I Am Not.

So: I am NOT, therefore I AM.

Bang! Yer Dead.

Me Two.

Then (NOW!) No-One SEES: I AM Everything. You are Everything. Everything IS and that includes "ideas of separation" and "ideas of Oneness." Both ARE and Are NOT at one same Timeless Being Everything wow. Enough said. This IS the Bottom Bottom Line: You Are

Accept-ing With No Accept-er

Follow-up from D.R. - It has been several weeks since the so-called "awakening." There appears to be a interesting phenomenon happening: there is an ever present sense of NOT caring one way or the other any more about whether there is this going back and forth between so-called "bondage/duality" and so-called "liberation/oneness." This appearance of movement between me-ing and be-ing appears to be happening always and may never appear to stop. Or it may. Who the hell cares. There is no desire to seek a way out of this sense of back and forth. One might say, there is just acceptance of what is. Allowing for what is.

Like the empty sky, Awareness is always ever-fresh and allowing anything g and everything to appear and dissolve while remaining untouched and eternally free…

Well then must have slipped into the "being" phase again while writing that last bit there (!)

That is all beautifully articulated. Steady wisdom ... accept-ance with no accept-er.

Who Am I? I Am THAT

A question from a reader of the book, “From I Am to I Am, With Love," arrives today: Personality traits still come up but there is a knowing that this is not me, my true nature is awareness, peace silence. This is in the background of all that appears.

This Awareness-Peace is not “in” the background. IT IS the silent still ever-free background. And THAT is what You really are. All else is imagination based on a self-concept … an “I” apart from Wholeness. The “background” of Being-Awareness AND the “content” of Being Awareness are NOT TWO (that is why the ancients called This “Advaita … which translates in English as “Not Two.”) This Emptiness is also FULLNESS; these are Not Two…

And there is nothing for me to do for in reality i do no t exist; the recognition of awareness comes up more and more but i feel like i am waiting for the final penny to drop.

Then “you” will “wait” FOREVER. Where is this “me” … this “one you call you?” Who is writing, thinking, wanting? There is NO “penny to drop!” That is another “myth of liberation!” You are and you know you are. That is IT … the “big “it” the seeker seeks is already here now and the seeking of that separates “you” (in thought only!) FROM That. YOU ARE. Do you exist? That Existence IS and is Inescapably YOU as-you-are.

Asking the mind “Who Am I?” INSIDE that natural knowing that “I AM THAT” the Eternal Self, Naked Awareness Just THAT, is “recognized,” by no-one. Being-Awareness IS and does not ever fade or disappear; all that appears arises in That, yet That True Self is ever-present and remains as it is, untouched and free.

Any pointers for me?

Don’t Be Lazy To Investigate

M.H. Writes, Do you know, it's really frustrating to hear you and others speak words of truth; to be reminded of a very dear friend who said much the same 20 odd years ago and still to be sat here holding onto the belief that I am what I am not and to know there is not a damn thing "I" can do about it.

That's not actually true. What that "you" CAN do is LOOK into this story of "me" with a direct challenge to the assumption that there "Is a Me" and That Thought of I is what I am. That assumption is false as you can easily prove by actually looking into the space with a couple of simple questions. But first, can you NOT be? You ARE and THAT is inescapable. Start from that certitude.

Then if suffering or frustration is there, for whom? Where is the "self center" - the "me" - that keeps reasserting that "I hold onto that belief in a separate entity?" Ask YOU, WHO AM I? Where is this "me?" You look and see in the immediacy that there is only a temporary thought than is not always there and is completely gone in deep sleep where in the body is lived by Being-Awareness-Aliveness just fine!

Do NOT be lazy to investigate and root out that core false assumption! Read the other correspondence on my site, and stay with I AM … Being-Aliveness … and let THAT show you the infinity of Love and the emptiness of the Self. You were never born. Being The Unborn is Freedom and You Are THAT. Do not refuse that and do not pretend to be a little separate thing apart from That. I Love you.

Don't Believe This ... LOOK For Yourself

A.C. Writes, There is way more peace now. Still back and forth. But more "back" than "forth". Last night after reading the quote below ...

"Most people's activities are valueless, if not outright destructive. Dominated by desire and fear, they can do nothing good. Ceasing to do evil precedes beginning to do good. Hence the need for stopping all activities for a time, to investigate one's urges and their motives, see all that is false in one's life, purge the mind of all evil and then only restart work, beginning with one's obvious duties." – Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

With no desire or fear, there seems to me nothing that can be done. If the business website is updated or anything for business is done it is from a desire to make the business better. Without fear there seems to be no desire. Without the desire to give a gift, no gift would be bought. Without desire there seems to be no fear. Good and Evil. Without the "I" there seems to be no "good" or "evil". Any word that could be shared would be appreciated for I feel the hamster wheel beginning to turn.

Be careful NOT to take the pointers or words of any "sage" or "book" as some truth to be believed! Where is any believer? Where is a person who is attached to or avoiding any desire or fear?

You wrote "It seems to me that there is nothing to be done." Where is this "me?" Does it exist? Do you take a momentary appearing then disappearing movement of energy arising as letters m and e forming into a word "me" to be what you are? That is the only error. The ONLY mistake is to take your Eternal Self to be a temporary thought!

And ... It is NOT that there is "nothing to be done." There is NO-ONE. Then all "doing" happens as always, with no do-er and no effort of thought or emotion... This no-desire no-fear is YOU as What-You-Really-Are and ALL the rest starting from "me" is a dream-like appearance on the Screen of Presence-Awareness and THAT THOU ART.

Given THAT ... what there is in so-called "life" is... ACT as if "you" have free will. Act as if you have control knowing full well that all ideas of a "me" with control or free will are the dream of Being Itself.

Acting as if you have free will is simple... "you" have been doing that your whole life. Knowing yourself as Presence-Awareness and even before That the Absolute is NOT a belief and is NOT a "personal matter." As long as there is a seeming person let that person act in its own self-interest... just do what is next as if you can decide or do...

Who Is This "me?"

No-one no-where and that is the Real.

Recently I wrote a note with this quote to a seeker friend who has been "struggling" with this pointing:

"In the end, you see that your being is not a matter of work or effort. You are what you are. Your ever-present self is not the result of a process. Work and striving are in time, but what you are is already here. So it is hard to see how relying on time or effort could help you arrive at what is timeless and naturally present. This is about something so simple that we constantly overlook it due to assuming it is complicated. That is why many a seeker gave a good laugh when the basic point struck home. If you have been striving and struggling with this, it might be time to ponder on who is doing all that work! Certainly not your real nature. Then who — and why? That is why the question "Who am I?" is so potent. It immediately exposes the root of the issue, which is the nebulous sense of self at the core of our seeking and suffering. A little bit of looking and the bottom falls out straight away."

He responded, "Hi Charlie, This small paragraph certainly opened up something. 'I' have been struggling with a 'nebulous sense of self ' as it says. So I decided to just watch what that self or sense of ME self was. In order to have a 'me sense' or a 'sense of self' there must be awareness present to do so. Am I correct? I am trying to be still and let that sink in. "

My Answer: Yes, you are correct ... that's spot on. Stay with it...

Oneness Urges "Connection" To ItSelf

M.L. Writes, Felt the urge to connect, but don't know what to say. Maybe it's just time to have the ego be completely disregarded again. The pointers are going okay I suppose. Like "I" could tell. It seems like a bad idea to try to talk about what's going on because it just reinforces the seeker identity.

That urge comes from Oneness ... the Truth wants only Itself. And as John Wheeler quips, "The Path Is A Truthless Land." ALL paths lead "somewhere" ... the Truth of Being Awareness Aliveness is Right here Right Now and That is THAT. Ha! "Time to have the ego completely disregarded?" That is just another story of an uninvestigated storyteller … does that “I” telling the story actually exist? Where is this infamous ego that needs disregarding!? Is there any such thing? Or is there just Space-Like Awareness and a thought taken to be “who or what you are?” That is simply the Case Of Mistaken Identity! NOW quite possibly there will be a seeing from nowhere by no-one that even THAT is (inevitably and always) yet another aspect of what YOU really are, which is … Ta Da… EVERYTHING! That does NOT mean that there is everything and then apart from everything there is an “I.” Seeing this is the final understanding (not a mental comprehension … this is direct know-ing without a know-er.

A reminder from Maharaj: "One in a million will listen, understand and abide by the advice of the Guru, that ‘you are everything.’ He or she accepts with conviction ... [but] in most cases, the beingness assumes that it is a body that has taken shape, so one believes that he or she is born and will die. ... there is no death and no birth; one can never be born and die." The pointer is, BE that "One In A Million!"

Thinking about it and making up stories about it and trying to understand it are all not very helpful. Like the end of that [Bob Adamson] clip you sent, just ideas chasing ideas.
Yep. So simply STOP the habit in its tracks: As long as there is ANY vestige of belief in a “you” put that “you” to the task of Self-Discovery through Absolute Unswerving Commitment and Intention! Refuse to buy the con man mind’s game of separateness and suffering. Refuse all ideas of separateness and entity. Watch the thoughts as they come and go in Presence-Awareness and don’t latch on to any thought as being you or meaning something about you… that is all. Break that habit right now!

I do have a question on the pointers. You wouldn't think something so simple could be done incorrectly, but I've discovered there are a few ways to do "who am I". One way, which I think you were saying in the conference call, is after asking "do I exist" you look for the "I" in that place where you see directly that you exist.

What is this asking? Where is the ask-er? What says “I” over and over and over? WHAT is THAT? Where does that arise from and subside back into?

Ask the self-concept, the “I,” … Do I Exist? There is ONLY the QUESTION.
If you look for an answer you are sticking yourself back into ignorance.
Ask “you,” Do I Exist? No Answer. Ask with NO expectation or agenda to “get somewhere.” You are already HERE NOW. You ALREADY ARE what the mind seeks.

Like just asking "do I exist" sort of throws you back into "that" and obviously there is no "I" there. Another way is looking in the mind and seeing the "I" come up and seeing it is just a thought. Does it matter which way you do it or are both effective? Or am I way off track and need to be pointed back to the pointers?

I -I- I- I- STOP! What “throws" who into what? You are already THAT.

Anyhow, it's been back to basics here. Pondering the fact of my existence, which really is quite amazing. Also, after the mind exploded last week, things have been subtly different.
Once the seeing has happened there may “seem to be a ”flip-flopping” into identity but you can never again take it as seriously as you did before the mind collapsed in the First Instant of Timeless being.

I thought about you on your birthday and I hope you had a good time.

No-one was born. Yet a good “time” was had … by no-one!

I'm going into a meeting now. Don't blow my mind while I'm in there, okay? ;-)

WHAT “mind?” Show “me” a “mind” and “I” “won’t blow it!” LOL.

Ponder this… which was written today to another “seeker” … all you are facing is habits of the brain that is accustomed to thoughts of me myself and i. That was gone through in the charlie thing... it came to pass ... the investigation happened and all the story was seen as false, as is the story-teller... Break the habit. It takes your intention. It takes your commitment. Self-Knowledge is NOT a trivial matter! It takes all you can muster ... paradoxically for when you look there is No “you" but as is said over and over so long as there is that belief in a "person with will and volition" put that "person to the task of questioning its very existence!

To repeat what Nisargadatta said: "One in a million will listen, understand and abide by the advice of the Guru, that ‘you are everything.’ He or she accepts with conviction ... [but] in most cases, the beingness assumes that it is a body that has taken shape, so one believes that he or she is born and will die. ... there is no death and no birth; one can never be born and die."

BE that "one in a million! You are much closer to "the end" than “you" think.

The Story Is Irrelevant

D. L. Writes, "There is a curiosity about the experience of this awakening process - how it is perceived by the biological support unit (so-called person). i have read a small collection of them and they are as varied as the organisms themselves. all are of the greatest beauty, for it is beauty (a la Keats) expressing itself through form. If you care to share "yours", it would be most welcome."

In the life of this ‘charliething” John Wheeler, Bob Adamson, and a few others, kept pointing out the obviousness of Being Itself ... and also pointed out that the "self-centered idea of the person labeled 'me'" is no more substantial than a cloud of smoke appearing as a word-image from a skywriting airplane.

Investigating this idea of a person reveals its absolute absence, in that absence there is what always is ... the Presence of Awareness, Awareness, just That... the recognition dawned (dawns only always NOW) that inescapably, there IS Being-Existence, and That is appearing as Everything ... from Nothing.

This is NOT an "experience of an experiencer," rather it is the direct experience-ING of Life-Aliveness ... Living ItSelf through all that appears. This Self-Aware Presence is akin to the empty beauty of a Mirror in which all experiences arise as reflections, a play of shape and form with no substance in Reality. All there is is Nothing Being Everything. This is seen (so to say) or closer in language this is see-ing ... for no-one by no-one.

Words cannot but divide this into dualism. THIS See-ing Be-ing Love-ING Is ... Only One-Not-Two. Totality moves an organism to self-knowledge, seeing the Real and discarding the false, then Nothing happens to No One.

All that is merely a story arising presently in Being-Awareness. "You" asking “you” … "who is curious?" may bear fruitless seeing.

The false only stands in lack of investigation and when looked at head on from indiscoverable undisputable Naked Being-Awareness, the false is seen as the phantom it actually is. That’s it in a nutshell.

Ask Only About Your Own Suffering

Follow-up from D.L. - Thanks for your response to last weeks email. Questions: 1. What exactly happened for you to allow the shift in perception? There must be a single moment when you heard a word(s) and the mind gave up. You mentioned earlier it was talking to [John] Wheeler, but at what point in what Wheeler was saying were you able to see that "I am unborn"? 2. everything that arises does not last and therefore it is agreed to be unreal. and, nothing can threaten the awareness that we are. so, what ( and i appreciate the language issue) allowed the human organism to apparently associate with awareness? Why not the rabbit or the dinosaur? 3. Do you see that, as [Tony] Parsons says, its all a game? Just as life apparently evolves, so must the evolution away from thought - Huang Po discusses this - the source of all apparent evil is conceptual thought. if you give this up ( interesting in none of his lectures does he discuss how) and see that the senses connect one to nothing, realization can occur.

This is tail chasing. The story of what apparently happened to "another" is absolutely irrelevant. Are YOU suffering? That we can address. But there is no interest here in conceptual explanations or stories. The mind ("I") will ask endless questions ... WHO is asking THIS? Where is this "ask-er?"

DO YOU EXIST? Who says so? A self concept that reinforces itself in ignorance! IT says, IAMIAIAMIAMIAM. It's conceptual BULLSHIT!

As to Tony's pointers, you will have to ask Tony.

Welcome To The Home You Never Left

O. J. Writes, Dear Charlie, thanks so much for the videos you've posted on YouTube. They have given me a lohis deat of clarity. Your way of languaging advaita is very appealing to me, and the understanding that I don’t exist arises as I'm being reminded by you. Only the emptiness that form/movement happens over and against [what] really is. And this emptiness has the capacity of knowing.

Emptiness IS. THAT has NO "properties!" THAT is NOT an "object" and NOT a "subject!" (Not even a Really BIG "Ultimate Subject!") Don't complicate THAT with notions of "capacities" or some "knowing" or any other false notion! Drop all that; it's nothing but spiritual conceptualizing. Totally false.

It is the "I am" before the "thought-I am" as you say, the real is-ness.

Conceptually correct… NON-conceptually IT IS … as is pointed to with “language.” ONLY pointed to as what IS is indescribable, beyond language, beyond both being and not-being.

But still, though I see that this is true and I try to stay there, something also knows that there's more! Right?

No. That is absolutely NOT correct. There is NOT any "something." That's dualism, ignorance, the ignoring of the Real, Unborn Being. Now a little phantom “you" trades the Unborn Eternally Real for a paltry little identity you call “yourself” …that “me” or “I” … that says "I try to stay there" and claims there is a subject-me ("something") that "also knows there is more." ... And, when you look for such a thing as “I” or a "knower" apart from IS-ness what is found? Nothing!

Looking, seeing, from Nowhere … Here THIS IS … there is always what IS … and there is NO more than Everything! What “you” are not noticing is what there is still operating there a belief in an “I” that says, “I see” and “I try to stay there” etc. That “I” is a phantom taking itself very self-importantly to be real and separate from all that is. It’s the arrogance of ignorance (not “your personal” arrogance; it’s an impersonal delusion personalizing as a thought and feeling sense of a contracted “little me.”)

All this self-centered striving goes on until this “I” is seen through as a fake and only then (now) is the Real re-cognized as the Eternal Statelessness of Being-Awareness-Aliveness. And no-one can “do” this … because there IS no-one! It happens or not to no-one being everything.

Because Ramana talked about that Nirvikalpa samadhi, I have this ("demon"?) inside that keeps seeking for that state of not being aware of form/movement, only the absolute, only purity. If you feel like it and have time, please, can you help me by commenting on this?

THIS IS-Ness is NOT a “state!” THIS is beyond ALL “states.” Being-Awareness IS and That is Timeless, Spaceless, Unknowable, Unknowing IS-NESS.

Now look: WHO “has this demon?” What or who asks "another who" to “help me?” You tell a story of lies and then believe yourself! That’s crazy! Look: Terms of art like Nirvikalpa Samadhi and Sahaja Samadhi are descriptions of what actually already IS, NOT "prescriptions" nor "attainments.”

Ramana Maharshi was actually dismissive of Nirvikalpa Samadhi as unnecessary to “realization”… Ramana said, “… there is no good in trance [samadhi].” To a questioner who continued to ask about the importance of such “states,” Ramana replied, “If you are so anxious for trance any narcotic will bring it about. Drug-habit will be the result and not liberation." The urge to get "more" IS the ignorance of a mind that considers itself to be real and so chases its own extinction ("nirvana.") But this is patently impossible since there IS NO separate "I" ... it’s a phantom ... "mind" is nothing but a cloud-like phantom of a single thought -- "I" -- which is only an energetic formation in movement of infinite Being-Awareness-Aliveness. "I" is merely an appearance, like water in a mirage. Seekers who get an experience of "trance" in activity ... an EXPERIENCE ... become addicted to that experience; it's no different than drug addiction. And the brutal FACT is that NO "experience" is "the final state" or the sought-after "enlightenment."

The brutal fact is THERE IS no such "state" or "thing" as "enlightenment". ALL "states” come and go and ONLY That which NEVER changes, THAT which does NOT come and go, is the Real. And you are already That so all seeking to "become" or "attain" or "disappear into samadhi" (of any "sort") is what keeps the ignorance up front and seems to obscure the fact that You are already That ... Being-Awareness-Aliveness.

You cannot "become" what you already ARE.

Existence IS. Is there a separate "little you" apart from the Whole? That is simply ignorance, a false belief, an assumption that is only a speculation of language by a false entity that asserts its reality but cannot supply a shred of evidence for its solid separate existence as a “thing” apart from Everything. Being IS and THAT is appearing as everything. Even the idea of a “thing” apart! Paradoxically!

So that's all that is seen ... by no-one ... and all notions of some samadhi or "special state" disappears as this is seen by no-one --Emptiness -- arising IN Being-Awareness AS Naked, Raw Aliveness Itself.

Where is any notion of any state in deep sleep? The sleep state where "you" are NOT is the closest relative state that points to what is Real and Eternally So ... Nothing Appearing As Everything. Don't trade That for beliefs!

Follow-up from O.J. - Wow! thanks a lot for this beautiful and in depth lesson! That was very nice of you. It really gave me a punch on the jaw. Because although it's seen clearly that everything is one, the illusion of a me still continues, seeking after something.

That's Nothing Being Everything! No-one “gives lessons.” No-one is “nice to do that.” It’s all a dream; there is NO ONE. Yet, that appearance will go on as long as it does. There is no-one who can do or not do a damn thing about that ... or anything else. You (the cloud-like appearance of a ‘you') might as well argue with gravity … or try to kill the moon.

But this almost knocked me out! Thank you very much. It's like a burden is disappearing.. It's like there is this silent ...wow!!! intense silence, the "is-ness" that you emphasize really is a good pointer, a key!!

This Silence Always IS. The arising of “wow” is a kind of Seeing ... a Full Stop. It may happen that there is the arising, the happening, of refusing of all thoughts and abandonment of any belief or investment in "the seeker-me." That’s the “Full Stop.” But can a false entity, the phantom-like "me," DO or NOT DO THAT? Or anything else? NO. Absolutely NOT.

But it's still obscure. It's not possible to localize it and go into it! It's everywhere right?

YES, THIS is Everything and Nothing, Everywhere and Nowhere. Now: What arises as a "but?" And laments, "It is still obscure?" It's closer than your breath, the most obvious of all ... Ordinary Being, Being Everything. Never obscured. Only a "you" thought it was. Believe a thought of "I" or "me" or "you" to be real ... and you are lost in delusion. Yet that too IS a happening IN this Naked Being-Awareness which is NEVER ABSENT. See that right here right now!

Thank you for clarifying so many things. But its flavor gives rise to a sense of wanting to be consumed by it! (I'M SORRY!!!)

Okay, as a kind of poetic expression, this is quite right as far as it goes: There IS the Immensity Of Aliveness ... That's what IS ... and THAT seems to consume all that is false ... AND what gets consumed "against its real will" is the one who wants to be consumed. "You" don't REALLY want to "be consumed." That's a lie ... a strategy that the mind-ego employs to keep up the appearance of separateness and self-centered solidarity.

Can I ask how that happened in Charlie? Is there a technique?

What arises as these "yes, buts?" Who or what believes "wanting to be consumed by it" is somehow wrong and says "I'm sorry?" WHAT is saying thinking writing looking asking "but"-ing etc etc WHAT?? What brought out a “but?” Who says "Obscure?" Obscure to WHO? "You?"
LOOK: This mental thunderstorm storm called “you” is totally out of control! Is that noticed now? LOOK: That false “you” cannot stop the “but” from arising and that phantom “you” cannot erase itself. That false “you” believes it is real and so it believes “charlie” is real and “something happened "in charlie.” Now IT wants to know how. IT wants a technique, a process. LOOK: there is no charlie, no technique, no IT. How can No Thing dispel what does NOT exist!? Nothing will work. Nothing.

Nothing “happened in “charlie.” There IS NO “charlie.” There IS NO "O.J." There IS NO-ONE and NOT even THAT! So “who” or "what" would “employ a technique?” All sorts of stuff can appear to happen like asking who am I? Or meditating…but that’s all part of this dream of being human and separated from all that is. Nothing will work. It is absolutely hopeless. In other words, it is absolutely hopeless. To say it another way, it is absolutely hopeless. And, Nothing will work. Any "practice" or any "technique" presupposes a "limited, bound 'person' to practice." HOW could a practice that reinforces the false release the false from itself? And watch if the mind-ego says, "well, okay maybe Nothing WILL work." "Maybe "I" can "use" nothing" ..,. “do” “nothing” … as the "technique.” It's hopeless! There is NO WAY OUT.

Nothing happens here. Nothing happens there Nothing could happen "someday." There is NO “someday.” That is the fantastic dream of space-time and location. THIS alone IS … Timeless Spaceless Is-Ness.

This is it. This IS all there is. There IS NO Time, NO "someday," NO "becoming." ALL there IS, IS THIS. Nothing happening apparently as everything apparently being some things striving for no thing. Nothing Being the fantastic (fantasy!) Dream of Everything.

Follow-up from O.J. - Thank you! Yesterday everything was clinking clear. It was so alive, and so much gratitude, so much happiness and love, aliveness as you say.

That is ALWAYS the caseless case. Note that in the appearance of things “you” “come back” (so to say) and relegate this clearness to “yesterday.” But where or when is this “yesterday?” ALL there IS is NOW.

These e-mails from you have brought so much understanding with them, and caused a lot of revelation as to what we are. Nothing. Isness has been the theme of these last days. It’s amazing that nothing is!

Equally amazing is that EVERYTHING is.

There's still some unrest in here though, having worries about money and wanting to get out of certain relationships and so on...

That's what is. If there is an idea that it "should be different" then that's the suffering; only a "me" could want what is to be better, different, more or less than it is. What is IS and what is not IS NOT. Full Stop. This IS It. As It is and as It ain’t.

...and really wanting to thank some charlie guy it insists exists. So, with danger of spoiling non-duality, thank you so much again. I just want to bow. wow.

You are just bowing to your SELF … all there IS is YOU .... and YOU called Not-You. And, Non-duality includes it ALL! That cannot be "spoiled."

Although the I is back today suffering a bit, and the big aliveness of yesterdays blissful high moment [seems to fade?] more and more is being downloaded so to speak. More and more being downloaded? What does that mean? Makes no sense... Is this how it always goes?

For whom? Where is the “I” that claims it is "back suffering?" Can you find such a one apart from Awareness ItSelf? No. Whenever there is wanting of what has passed or is not here now there is suffering! When the “I:” that wants what isn’t is seen to be only a powerless thought-construct, suffering goes, and all there is, is what always already is … True Peace, Absolute Freedom, Unbounded Being Aliveness. If you experience a sense that what is ought to be different there will be suffering; release happens when it is seen that even THAT is part of everything … what IS … and then there is a hearty laugh!

Of course there's a wanting to die completely, and it's seen very clearly that that is what has to happen somehow.

To whom? How can that which is wisp of cloud-like thought die? That was never actually born. Nothing is there to die!

There's an urge somewhere to lose contact with the body and be only isness, but the isness is the body of course, though it's a mystery. The bodymind is irritated sometimes with it's so-called girlfriend, but otherwise, things are just great!!!!

All experiences arise in Being … Presence-Awareness. That is always Here and always Now. Nothing that changes is real; only Being-Awareness, Being Nothing, Being Everything is Real… go deeper into this claim of a “me” that is asking or doing or feeling or wanting to be controlling what happens; what drives this? What fuels this? What drives what is felt or thought?

Does the bodymind named charlie always only live totally moment to moment and never plan ahead or worry?

Plans happen. Whether they come to pass is always unknown. A trip was planned to Ireland. The trip was cancelled. No one does all that stuff; there is no real sense of being personally “involved” in these happenings … everything is simply happening in the Presence of Being-Awareness. There is NO doer in Reality. The doer was a false identity, a mistake made in the mind. So, worry is gone immediately (if it arises at all) as it’s seen that there is no person to be concerned about what happens or may happen. All "worries" are about a self-identification called “I am this body” and “I have to make sure I take care of it and keep it safe and secure.” That is the suffering of mistakenly identifying as a thing called “the bodymind - me.” You are NOT an object or a thing that can change or be threatened. That bodymind is an instrument THROUGH which Totality Happens. That organism is fundamentally connected to everything that is. You are Being-Awareness and nothing else … AND Everything “else.” Paradoxically! It’s ALL Presence-Awareness; ALL Aliveness. Everything is That. Full Stop.

Consider this, ponder this: As long as you believe this is "your" life you will hang on for dear life to that idea. Because "you" do NOT want to "lose your life." But if there is no "you," who is hanging on to what? It is awfully tiring trying to keep that which you never had! That is a game you are sure to lose. And what makes you keep playing a losing game? Ponder that one.

BE in The Gift Of Unknowing.

More O.J. Follow-up: Q: Even though deep spriritual insights happen almost every day in meditation, ultimate peace is not found. I am starting to believe that some how I am creating this whole experience, including the so called matter all around me. Is the world - I mean all of materia - just my thoughts? I see this "I am" as a very good pointer, and your video on YouTube called "all questions dissolve in I am" is really everything that needs to be said. But questions such as "how come there is eyes and ears and nose?" "how come there is life and death and what will happen after?" It doesn't seem like there's any free will at all, the law of cause and effect is a LAW! But why all of this then? why does God want to suffer? Why can't "I" disappear into nothingness? Why do I feel I'm beeing guided?

What is it that is asking all the 'why' questions?

Seek the source of that which asks for a story within a story within a story. You are Emptiness. Be what you are ... and stop pretending to be the story and the storyteller, and the star of the never-ending story!

Before god is Emptiness is ... You ... and You Eternally ARE. Be as you are. Empty and storyless.

The mind is way too arrogant, claiming "I KNOW" what YOU are going to say! Just notice that ... here is what actually is here to say:

The "I" as a thought of sense of being a person need not disappear and most likely will NOT until the physical body dies! All that is being pointed to is a false IDENTIFICATION with the "I" thought. Seeing the false AS false is what this is all about. Then suffering abates and is finally gone forever as there is no sense that life is happening "to me." There is Life Itself and you are that, including ALL thoughts. Waiting for the "I" to "disappear" will have that "I" around still "believed in" and looking for its own absence (!) and that can bring suffering. One who waits waits forever. See right now that YOU ARE and THAT is KNOWN beyond doubt. Everything else is a story and just let the story be without attaching yourself as a person telling a story ... being a story and a storyteller. Let it BE. No resistance no problems! As to saying "I got it," that's just another thought story. Drop it and BE.

Consider:

"In this spiritual hierarchy, from the grossest to the subtlest, you are the subtlest. How can this be realized? The very base is that you don¢t know you are, and suddenly the feeling of "I amness" appears. The moment it appears you see space, mental space; that subtle sky-like space, stabilize there. The False Stands Only In Being Univestigated

I know that the 'ME, MYSELF, or I' thought is not who I am...however when I wake up in the morning, I feel like I am my body. It is like the body is anchoring me (a sense or gripping in my throat). There is a kind of ME sense which I find hard to look past.

And where IS all that? In thoughts. Where IS “a body” apart from a THOUGHT OF ‘a body?’ What says "I know?" "I feel?" WHOSE throat? Where is the author or doer of that "sense?" What in you keeps saying "I-I-I-I-I?" Where IS this "me sense?" Apart from a concept, a thought that is driving experience, there is no actual entity in there. Try your mightiest to find that entity. You cannot! It is the phantom storyteller of the sad sad story of seeking and never finding.

Where in the body are “you?” Where in thoughts are “you?” Where is "you?" What IS “you”? Where IS this "you" you call "me?" What is it “you” take “yourself” to BE? Is it real? Or only a thought? Appearing and disappearing in Awareness Itself?

ONLY when you “take yourself to be a thought” ... as in the erroneous belief “I feel like I am my body” ... is there any suffering or confusion. Where IS this “I?” Investigate that!

Also during moments when I am having intense emotions and my mind is running away with thoughts (jealousy, anger, frustration), I find it hard to see myself as the One behind it all.

Listen to yourself! You say “I” “I” “I” and THAT is what needs to be investigated. Where IS this “I” you take yourself to be? THERE ARE APPEARING AND DISAPPEARING MOMENTARY MOVEMENTS OF ENERGY HAPPENING AND THEY GET LABELED AS "FEAR ANGER ETC" AND THEY GET TAKEN ON AS "MINE" IN IGNORANCE. Where IS "the owner?" You falsely identify as a single thought, “I,” and then endlessly add to that in ignorance (ignoring the Space-Like Awareness IN which all that arises.) Now you try to add “understanding” or “awakening” or “enlightenment” to that FALSE self … the thought “I” is NOT the True I of inconceivable Being-Awareness. Thought looks for no thought! That is absolutely an impossible task; the answer is NOT in more or better or different thoughts! What you ARE is NOT a thought!

LOOK RIGHT NOW: Can you say you are NOT? You ARE and that is known before the thought of knowing. Before the subject “I” and the object” other” (including “other called body”) YOU ARE. Absolutely 100% Unknowable… and yet IT IS. That is what is Real. ALL else is the fake, the con man called “”me myself I.” See that right now… you are and that is the knowing Presence of Awareness.

Any advice? I am not completely done with your book ["From I Am To I Am, With Love"] because I am reading it carefully :)

NO advice. Only a pointing out what is real and the suggestion that you see if you can actually find this alleged "i" - person. Read the pointers on this website, there are many pages of pointers here! Keep looking from Naked Presence into these thought-emotion movements and see if you can find ANY separate controlling thinking feeling "entity." You are gonna come up Empty! That ... Emptiness, suffused with the Presence of Knowing, is Real. The identity is NOT real.

Where is this “I” that "woke one day?" Seek the source of that “I.” You will end up only with what IS … No Thing. That is what You are, so to speak. THAT is Emptiness, Being-Aliveness, beyond language, the unknowable Knower of the states of sleep, dream, and waking-dream of the “I.”

You are never NOT home. There are just false expectations that some "state" that inevitably passes will be "permanent." There will be no such thing; it's a myth propagated by teachers and books that seem to promise some such. The experience you describe happened in being-Awareness and THAT, Being-Awareness, is simply NEVER actually missing, just overlooked. It is what you are RIGHT NOW ... wherever you go here you are, whatever the clock says it's only now. There is NO "Power of Now." ALL there IS is NOW. Here. No Where/Everywhere. Just see that what's being pointed to is indescribable AND unavoidable. Nuff said :-))

The thought "I am" is a self-reinforcing thought. We prove we are separate by proving it with thought. This is seen through when there is an earnestness to invesitgate: "I Am. Is That True?" Can I know absolutely that I am the thought 'I am'?"

No. The proof that this thought "I am" is not the True I AM of nonceptual Being Its Self is available be seeing right now that in deep sleep there IS no thought of "I am," and yet Life lives the body organism. If YOU are the "thought I am" than YOU would die when sleep happens, and YOU do NOT.

I AM IS. That is NOT a thought. NOT a feeling. It just .... IS!

All Preferences are for a "me"

An email arrives: In the "NowsLetter" you wrote, "deepest seeing". There's a preference here for just "seeing". ("Deepest" could imply a 'path' to getting deeper ...)

Glad to hear from you and I always appreciate your detailed approach to pointers. I will be posting this shortly to clarify the pointer for any else who may have a similar interpretation:
It's said that way as there is quite often, for the appearance of a seeker, a "seeing of this". But that seeing is not the deepest seeing wherein there is no one. It's pointed out to that dream-seeker, out of the dialogues I have with those appearances that are still a bit deluded by the subtle sense there is a see-ER of this Absolute see-ing. But no pointer will ever be "accurate" or "right" or "perfect." They're ONLY pointers! Focus on getting the words a certain way can be misleading as then the focus is off Presence, Being-Awareness-Aliveness, and onto the comparing and judging mind-stuff.

Ultimately all words only point, and so they appear out of nowhere. This is an absolute mystery here.

Finally, I am reminded of the Hsin Hsin Ming: "The great way is not difficult for those who have no preferences." From no-point-of-view ALL preferences are for an entity. No worries, not having a go at anyone, this is just a natural aha! In this no-preferences no-entity Seeing This -- as it is -- arising in what IAMYOUAREALIVENESS.

Does Awareness Care? WHO cares?

This kind of struck me and so the following question arose: Does Awareness care???Who cares???Is it nonconditional Love with a capital L that cares????Who's the one that's interested??? This is an excellent question!

This caring "happens." Nobody cares: This is the happening of nobody caring. Through some organisms there is apparent caring or empathy i.e. Mother Teresa or "sailor" Bob Adamson or John Wheeler or Stephen Wingate. Through some organisms there is NO apparent caring, NO empathy... i.e. Saddam Hussein or Charles Manson ... OR even some VERY direct no-bull Nonduality "teachers" (Wayne Liquorman comes to mind, no disrespect, just how it appears "here.") But LOOK! On investigation it is seen ... there is no "person," no "entity" DOING or CREATING this naturally arising "caring."

So when the expression comes out, regarding a caring about ending your suffering, that is simply Oneness, appearing as This and Being That Caring. There is nobody caring, and THIS is what "nobody caring" looks like ....!

"Who is the 'one' that is 'interested'?" No-One is interested. There is nothing and no-one caring about anything. THIS is what "no-one and nothing caring about anything" looks like! You see, the mind-brain machinery thinks of love as the opposite of hate. And it thinks of caring as a person caring, offering some pity or feeling-sorry-for. That is all bullshit. This LOVE (as you say with a Cap L) simply IS. This Love, I call Aliveness (ALL LIVE-NESS), Isness, Being-Awareness, or Deliciously Inescapable Choiceless Cluelessness, or .... "Marmalade!"

Call it whatever, "it" (words! "IT is not a thing, the words is a lie!... but words are what is happening here, so .....) "IT" (Livingness-Beingness) IS, and "IT" stands alone as Nothing and Everything. Aliveness equally loves BEING both love and hate, both war and peace, both caring and not caring, both Saddam and Teresa, ALL the "pairs of opposites." Being-Aliveness-Lovingness (Sat Chit Ananda) has NO Opposite expect in the story of "me and other-than-me." THIS is a dear friend, Tony Parsons, puts it, "Nothing Being Everything."

THIS Being-Aliveness is "IT." NOW: Where is any exclusion OR inclusion in THAT!??

Thanks for a really great question. It appears in the dream-story that lots of "seekers-on-the-edge" have been stuck in that one. And lots of love and a warm hug right back at-cha! Before All, During All, and After all, You ARE That Love. So Love says hello to Love and Love asks a question and Love answers a question. There is Only Love ... Being all of This ... Totality.

Who is the "believer?"

What is it that "believes" anything to be true or not? Inquire!

A note arrived today in a publicly posted (no copyright) newsletter that is kind of worth sharing ... it says,

I am periodically taken to task for not having a teaching style more like some of my preceptors - most notably, Nisargadatta Maharaj. Maharaj was famous for speaking from the standpoint of the Absolute. He would say things such as, "I was never born and I will never die" and "I am awake even when I am asleep."

Such assertively non-dual statements sometimes had the effect of shocking his listeners into a profound, transcendent Seeing.I am sympathetic to this approach but I have rarely been comfortable using it. I feel much more at home when I am meeting my listeners where THEY are...most of them believing that they were born and will die and that they are asleep while asleep. From this point of "obvious" truth we can then proceed to examine the more profound, underlying nature of this "one" who lives and dies and sleeps.

No one can deny that there is EXISTENCE here. The nature of that EXISTENCE can (and has been) debated endlessly. But this EXISTENCE is self-proving. It is not a philosophical debating point but a self-affirming Truth. It is here at the center when you pull off the onion-like layers of your apparent self - the self that lives and dies and sleeps and wakes.We are the victims of our beliefs. When you "believe" the pointers of a teacher such as Maharaj the inevitable result is a kind of nihilism in which all that is apparent (including yourself) is denied as meaningless and illusory.

When you believe the pointers of a teacher such as myself the inevitable result is the sense of having a progressively deeper and truer knowledge about the nature of Existence.

So pick your poison. With a little luck...either one will kill "you."

Yes ... this is somewhat how the Obviousness of Being-Awareness ... Existence As-At-Is ... gets pointed out here .... Except that HERE there is NO belief in a teacher or a student.

Now, looking from this Naked-Being-Awareness into what APPEARS to be, WHERE is any "believer" who now "believes" a pointer? The Truth, believed, becomes a LIE ... it's the false "entity called me" that is required first, before any other concept can be "taken on faith."

Let's just point to the Absolute Pardox in this.

1. I AM is Self-Knowing Existence- Awareness.
2. WHO (or WHAT) AM "I?" Nothing but That.

Suffering abides in "I believe in beliefs and believers."
Freedom IS ... IS, Being, free of beliefes and believers.

There IS NO "WAY"

Follow-up From R.H. – Thanks for last night... [our conference call - 'global satsang'] your actions are "selfless and inspiring" (though I know you don't intend to be). [But] A question occurred to me after one of your responses last night (one I thought best to address "one on one")…

Everything that happens here is freely shared. Here, there is nothing to hide, nor any “person” who would care to hide anything. Only a fake would need to be “careful.”

You ask, Does the "my way or the highway non-dual" approach you seemingly take mean there is "no other way" to realize the illusion of being a separate individual?

What!?? WHERE did THAT interpretation come from? At least you said “seemingly.” But look … you are just NOT hearing what’s being said. You are being a belief in a "personal entity" listening to another apparent person, which is just another cherished unexamined belief! … that is exactly what the mind does ... IT “knows” itself as a person and projects out that same idea of personhood on an empty mirror. You are looking at your own reflection of an ignorant mind-story … this story-teller who loves to tell his various “war stories” and his “being an enlightened person” stories writing ego-enlightenment poetry! … an “I” apart from the whole (impossible!) who challenges any pure nonconceptual expression of the one-essence …

There is no “my way” or any OTHER “way.” All that happens, spontaneously and with ZERO forethought, is an expression arising in response (seemingly!) to an energy of aliveness appearing as questions and sharing. One to One. I AM to I AM.

You miss the splendor of what’s pointed to in evaluating or comparing things … this way or that - that way or this, how many times have you heard that there is NO WAY? Yet the ignorance persists ... but for WHO?

What is happening here is the mind – which IS unbalanced nutzoid ignorance – running after a parsed out few words from an 80 minute conversation and IGNORING the essence of this sharing. All that is being said is YOU look for yourself. And if these pointers or the expressing organism through which words are sounding doesn’t resonate, then go on looking until you find one that does. There is no caring either way here. Notice that no donation is requested. Nothing is pushed on anyone. All there is here is the uncontrived clueless expressing happening. If you want to argue concepts and “paths” you are barking up the wrong tree!

In the sage words of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi: "The thought 'Who am I?' will destroy all other thoughts, and like the stick used for stirring the burning pyre, it will itself in the end get destroyed. Then, there will arise Self-Realization." There is a lovely paradox in all this: While there is in Truth no such thing as a separate “I’ and you already ARE what you seek, as long as there is the false BELIEF in a “me, myself, I” then this investigation is clearly called for.

S.A. Writes, I greatly enjoyed the conference call. I hope I wasn't too disruptive! If you can't have fun with total freedom, what good is it? It's always interesting to me because we have to use dualistic speech to try and communicate non-dualism. I have great empathy for you and those who teach because of this. Now before you chide me for using "I" three times let me state that I know Santa Claus isn't real but I can still use the word. Using "I" in language is much easier than stating 'this mind/body thing' every time a self refer once is made. LOL

Oh ABSOLUTELY. It is only in a meeting and QandA context that I get after people who are still using personal pronouns in a suffering sense of being a separate entity!

Hell, Charlie, maybe this mind/body thing is right where it should be.

It’s right where it IS, so to say … . “Should” implies better/worse, right/wrong and even more difficult to see, “should” implies some controlling force or entity (‘me’ or ‘God’) “somewhere not here” that is pulling strings or wanting to. On investigation none such can be found. And another aspect of that is a belief that there “IS” “Time.” That’s a LOL matter of nattering nonsense!
But on closer looking, IS there an “it,” a “bodymind,” at all, apart from a story, a thought-feeling storm with a mouth? IS there any such THING as IS?

The understanding of the 2 basic points of reality are understood by “me”.

The “me” is false. If you are still convinced there is a “me” that “is convinced,” where IS that thing? You are and you know that you are. All is Oneness appearing as a dreamer that dreams it is a separate me apart from the whole. But how can anything be apart from ALL THAT IS… Oneness Itself IS and even this false idea of a “me” IS that Oneness appearing as two and many and all. No separation anywhere. Even the conviction of separateness IS Oneness, One Sourceless Being, appearing as two-ness-ing.

Understanding this in the mind is the booby prize! Who understands? A dreamer.

I still find my day goes in and out of suffering.

That’s what is happening. To whom?

I have a time where my mind is engaged, suffering happens. Something in me notices it, full stop…

That is not accurate. There is nothing “in you.” The noticing happens from nowhere, it is (so to speak) Awareness-Being that is noticing Itself ... Its Self ... appearing as a "suffering entity." But so what? It is as it is … Oneness, Onenessing! But all that is still a dream, and you will be the dreamer until you are not. Nobody is here and nobody is there. Emptiness alone IS and all that seems to be real is a dream “me” dreaming “it” is separated from the whole. The dream goes on … until it is seen by no one that there is dreaming happening in Oneness as Oneness and that’s all there is … that’s the full stop. What you are … BEING … is inescapable, unavoidable and absolutely UNKNOWABLE.

… the truths are again realized and the suffering fades. I would say the suffering to not suffering ratio is still 80-20 unfortunately. Sure when I first saw the truth it was 99-1 before I started “full stop” when my mind was racing.

That is what is happening in the dream.

What am I missing, my mind is stronger than the apparent reality, at least 80% of the time. Thanks.

What the “I” always forever is missing is Nothing. Because Nothing cannot be either missed or known, found or lost, you might very well have a good laugh and head for the tavern or the whorehouse!

Yes, in my case meeting John Wheeler the seed was planted. My brows were plenty furrowed until the investigation proved there is no entity choosing or deciding, not in this charlie-thing or in any other pattern of the 'person' appearance.

So seeds get planted. The IS plants 'em and might or might not sprout them into the inquiry into what I Am and what I Am Not.

Another attendee and co-host writes, THANKS SOOOOO MUCH CHARLIE! We had a BLAST! I think that your words touched more folks than you know. I think that those who did bristle were fighting with the simplicity of Advaita - I know I do!

And that battle is suffering, isn’t it? This is so simple; they are, as you are, and that is known. That’s it in a nutshell. Notice the shell, not the nut inside it! Then notice the space both nut and shell appear in and know that you are that. Then it’s truly all over. Life lives itself in endless peace as has always been the true nature of things.

For a few people it may have been too just too non-dogmatic but I would say the majority were married to an idea of complete secularism and your words hit hard to fracture that facade.

Good news! That’s what John Wheeler offered to me and it does work. Isn’t THAT cool?

My dualistic monkey-mind just won’t let me believe that it is that goddamn simple…

Yet the space of Being-Awareness is untouched and so let the monkey-mind chatter. Never mind. No matter!

When you stir the pot with this group you have no idea what you will get. I think there some (perhaps many) who think it is a load but some have already got it, some are close, and some need more persuasion for the house of cards to fall.

No persuasion is needed … only a mind could get persuaded and convinced (conned!) and this natural Knowing-Awareness of Being is prior to all that mental stuff and beyond either conviction or doubt. The seeing of this part of the message comes along as the seeker investigates for himself or herself! No words from another will ever let the false be convinced it is false (how could it!?)

In the story of me and other, the con seems to be in full force for some, has been crumbled a bit for others, and others are “on the edge.” But a con is a con! It isn’t real, only falsely accepted in the absence of investigation. So in most cases simply seeing “I am, and that is known absolutely,” will seem to the AHA! Of natiral seeing of what is real, and then seem to be obscured again, until what is doing the obscuring … the “me” idea … is looked at head on with Naked Awareness. And then it stops like a deer in the headlights. In that stop the search ends … just NOW.

I would LOVE to be a fly on the wall after the session - I saw several people discussing it, which is GREAT!

Q: I humbly accept that you are pointing to the fact hat a fictitious 'person,' identified as this body-mind with a name, is still seeking enlightenment and being concerned with so-called others. I agree that this is the bottom line of the inquiry, which for me is fulfilled in the moment of the inquiry only. I have yet to relax into BEING THAT. I guess I am occasionally seeing the freedom-from-suffering while searching for the freedom-to-act as Consciousness.

Ummm ....... not knowing IS freedom....

... all is resolved effortlessly in the Unborn. In This not knowing Unborn Unknowable IS there is no one accepting or doing or being any thing at all, nice or not. In the appearance, the dreamcharacter brian wants the best for the dreamcharacter charlie. And vice-versa!

Just see this as the dream! The Self is the Dreamer. The dream appears in That Awareness and fools the mind into accepting or rejecting, being this or that.

You are and you know you are. That is quite literally all there is to 'realize.'

SO, You are already always resting in endless beginningless peace ... in and AS That.

Awareness, Being, is already always only the "Actor" ... only already always "acting as Consciouness" ... dreaming ...

Q: I thought the talk (in Norman Oklahoma on Sept 30th) went well, but I was concerned that one of the people there was put off by some of what came up and that maybe some things were said that should not have been or could have been put differently.

There may have well been some at that meeting that, for example in my experience of one appearing 'person' that is not yet hearing what is being said, are taking the pointers as only concepts one sometimes gets and sometimes does not get with the ego-mind.

For this fellow, it seems that currently it's all conceptual ONLY. And in my experience he is still taking himself to be a "very insecure person" and "person" that can be both a vociferous admirer AND (the other side of a persona like that) quite easily offended.

The bottom line is he is not really hearing, not listening, not really INVESTIGATING if the "me" exists; only agreeing or disagreeing. Judging and evaluation! So there is not really looking at who he is and who he is not. I have seen this happen often. It happened to that way for me; John Wheeler and "Sailor" Bob Adamson had to get quite pointed and play real hardball -- sometimes very very loudly! -- about my ass-kissing persona that then would flip into a pissy person hurling accusations that Bob and John didn't really "have it."

This gets resolved only by investigating this "person" who still is under the sway of the delusional mind ... and the real deal here is that NO "teacher" "HAS IT or DOES NOT HAVE IT." There is no IT to have.

I am nothing, I have nothing to teach, I am not a teacher and there are no students. What happens in these talks and meetings is an open sharing of what worked to bring my suffering to an end. "If they have ears they hear."

There is no entity controlling any appearance’s “expression” nor is there any controlling entity causing any apparanet “other’s” reactions. This is proved beyond doubt OONLY through deep investigation. All I suggest here is looking to see what in "you" is concerned about what happens to a so called "other" and notice that there is only a movement of thought energy taken on board as a substantial, solid and real "me" – a belief ONLY that is NOT being looked into and dismantled at the core.

In short who cares? Only a "me" can care what "another" says, does, believes or feels. There IS NO OTHER. These are all imaginary figments in a dream. Only a "me" can judge and evaluate and have preferences and want some pattern of energy to be different than it appears to be. It's all futzing about in a dream by a dream character. So with all love and respect I humbly suggest that YOU really LOOK for this "me" that thinks it is a real, controlling or knowing anything, or is "you" and the"other" and "charlie" merely an appearance of a content of awareness ... and is there an object arising in awareness that ignores the awareness and becomes a fake knower, a pseudo-subject?

Who cares? Find out if there is any such thing!

Then all this folderol goes up in a cloud of heatless smokeless light and laughter can hardly be contained.

There is no me-you-other. That's the bottom line. It was all a dream!

Q: I recently discovered your site (www.theeternalstate.org) and renewed my hope of understanding this. I have been listening to the audios and videos on your site and have questions, if you don’t mind. I guess that I expected this to clear up without my participation but ….

That’s common, it’s a misunderstanding of the way some point to what is and say things like “there is no one so there is nothing that 'you' ('I') can do."

As a pointer to the actual Real essence of what you are, there is perhaps value in the pointer that “there is no one.” But when taken on as a belief by the “person” who still is convinced that he or she "IS" a real separate controlling entity, all that belief usually results in is resignation, ennui, despair. Saying or believing “I am no one so obviously there’s nothing I can do” is a false belief held by a “person” egoically claiming to be no one. And since "I believe" “I am no one” and therefore “I am powerless” to rediscover what is true, as a consequence of believing this lie I must be doomed to a hopeless state of despair at worst or “quiet desperation” at best. Then that hopelessness is covered over by what a “me” calls “hope.” It says, "Maybe 'I' CAN find this peace I seek!" You will NOT.

This True Perfect Peace is the absence of "you." So that hope is like icing on a turd! It’s a product of the false beliefs in a “me” and “other than me”, of a personal attainment for “me,” and a false belief in "time," and a "someday" when “I will get there.” But you cannot get TO the HERE and NOW. You already ARE HERE NOW!

So, these beliefs, when unexamined, operate at a deep level, and result in a certain yet totally false conviction ... the conviction that there IS a separate "me" that must somehow get control if "its time and its life." This conviction is like being sentenced to life by a conceptual judge, to a conceptual prison of endless suffering as a seeking and never finding what is sought. Whether through money, sex, drugs or accomplishment, or religion or spirituality, and finally "nonduality," there is this endless seeking for ... and never finding ... true satisfaction! It's horrible.

Something you said (in the audios and videos on your site ) about understanding who and what you are really hit home. I have read that before but I don’t think paid close enough attention to what was really meant by it. I must know who I am first? I must ask myself this?

Let’s go over the “basics:” The good news (very good news indeed!) is that the suffering has a cause and when the cause is looked into and rooted out at the core, suffering ends and then there is simply what is, unmodified, uncorrected and unaltered, and life in true freedom happens … for no one (paradoxically!). Elimnate the cause and its effects cannot remain. Here's how:

First off: Again, asking yourself right now, “Do I exist?”, it is absolutely certain that you are. This is absolutely known … I AM. No one can say “I am not.” So Being, your Awareness of Being here now every moment, is primary and inescapable. THAT is what you are. I AM. Nothing added, nothing but this NON-conceptual I AM. You as This are already awake, already home.

Secondly: What IS the cause of suffering? An uninvestigated claim that there is such a “thing” as a separate solid “me” that must manage and control its life (“my life.”) What is the nature of this claiming mechanism? It is “naught but a thought!” The I AM of your undeniable Awareness of Being IS and That exists before the thought “I.” Then the thought “I” comes before all else. As in "I ... am ... this body." And the thought I is NOT the true “I-Consciousness that you actually are. The I thought points to what is … points only! Looking right NOW: Is the thought of a thing ever what is pointed to or represented by the thought? Can you burn a log in the fireplace by shouting “fire” at the wood? Can you put a fire out with the word “water?” NO! (And without a thought added to the I thought, where is this "body?" That "body" you are probably still convinced that you are is also "naught but a thought!")

So the word “I” is NOT the true I of Presence-Awareness. You are and you know that you are. That I AM that you are is the one same I AM that everyone is. Again, asking yourself right now, “Do I exist?”, it is absolutely certain that you ARE. That’s “step one of two” in this final seeing of the real … and step two is a matter of seeing what is false and discarding that. That knowing awareness arises as the thought I am. That I AM is certain and Real. The thought "I" that appears to divide what is into concepts of I and other is false.

Another thing that I was hanging onto is what the state of enlightenment would mean. I had ideas of a totally secure feeling of joy and well-being that would allow me to go through life untouched by negative thoughts, feelings or events. I don’t really believe that now but still find myself hoping there is something (soothing, comforting, etc.) here somewhere.....

You will never get “there!” There is no attainment. No such thing as peace of mind. No such thing as “my” well-being. It ain’t personal at all. And there IS NO teacher, no student, all this is unborn and the ONLY reality is I AM. Your TRUE SELF, the Being-Awareness that you inescapably know and are, JUST IS, beyond ideas of a me who is either “secure” or “insecure.” You see, so long as the false belief in a separate I entity is still at play there is often a feeling of insecurity and vulnerability. This was my experience until it was seen clearly that there simply is no such thing as a “me” that can be vulnerable and insecure.

What you are describing is a STATE. A state that will "allow me to go through life untouched" ... that's one of what Stephen Wingate calls The Outrageous Myths of Enlightenment!" You get free of a myth by seeing that it IS a myth! "The earth is flat!" That was a myth. Now no one believes that one. Just seeing the false AS false is an aspect of this clear knowing of what is real and what is not real.

All "states of 'me' being this or that" come and go. What never changes? Only THAT is real. And nothing real can be threatened and ”feel insecure.” And nothing unreal actually exists.

There is joy and well-being. But not for “you!” That joy and well-being is your Natural, Eternal state. But THAT is NOT “personal!" THAT is, in a way of speaking, the ABSENCE of “the person.”

So besides acknowledging (I Am) how do I proceed?

Asking who am I comes after the knowing I AM. There is NO “acknowledging” needed. It is simply the direct nonconceptual knowing of your own presence of being. Here and now you ARE. Full stop!

So that is known. Period. Now, what is “next” (actually it is simultaneous but appears as a “process in time”) is that you set into investigating WHAT IS this “identified pseudo-subject” that calls itself “I” in thought and considers itself separate from “other than I” also in thought … this is in “part two” of this seeing, discovering once and for all what you are NOT. "I am a person:" Is that TRUE? Is the thought the thing? What AM I? I AM. What am I NOT? Any thing at all. I AM No Thing. Yet, I AM. Don’t try to get that with the mind! It can’t be known that way. THIS is in a way, NOT-KNOWING.

I AM THAT. What? NOT KNOWING. Yet I AM. Got it? Drop it!

From experience I can confirm that you must know beyond doubt BOTH what you ARE (Presence-Awareness, Being-Consciousness) and what you are NOT (a thing apart from all that is.) Then the suffering ends right here right now. Then (now) there is Absolute Freedom, the Home you never actually left. But this is not freedom for “you.” It is Freedom FROM the false belief in the idea of a separate “you.”

I AM. That is certain, inescapable; you know that Your True Nature, your own Being, simply, IS. Then looking at WHO or WHAT I AM is the investigation into all false beliefs, beginning with the belief that the thought I is what I am. You are not a thought! You were never a concept and never could be. It was a mistake made in ignorance that the thought I was believed to be what you are. Asking “Who am I?” and (importantly!) rejecting all answers as “me” is part two of this nondual seeing.

So that’s the “drill:”

1: I AM. That is certain.
2. I am NOT a thing apart from That I AM. That is proved to yourself on investigation.

Q: If I am not controlling anything, then how does anything happen?

That is a good question. The answer, however, will not satisfy the questioner, which is merely a thought-form arising in Presence here and now. This Presence is what is real, never changing. So all that “is happening” is not actually “happening” at all. Nothing is happening. You are dreaming of happenings and dreaming a question and dreaming a questioner. If there is a sleep dream at night, when waking happens the dream is seen as a dream and no longer troubles you. You don’t ask “ If I (the dream I) am not controlling anything how does anything happen?” regarding that sleep dream because you know beyond doubt that nothing ever happened in the dream. It was never real, only imagination and in a way ONLY a movie arising that was watched. By what? Who or what watches even now as these questions and answers arise? In this “waking dream?”

Right here right now golf is being watched on TV, then typing is being watched, reading is being watched, watching as hearing sounds of a TV announcer is happening, seeing the fingers dart around hitting little black squares with white squiggles is happening, black markings appearing on white space is being watched. What is watching all this?

This is Not-Knowing, the Unknowing witnessing Awareness, Being-Consciousness, Aware and Awake as the silent Witness of the dream. Looking for, and failing to find, a separate entity doing or controlling ANYTHING is what Leo Hartong elegantly calls "awakening TO the dream." (NOT waking up from it. Awakening to the seeing that this so-called "waking state" of consciousness is a dream we ... as out True Self ... are simply watching.)

Is there any way to influence what manifests?

Asked and answered. What would control or influence in the dream? Watching the dream (drama) is what is real. All notions of influence or control are stories of a dream character. Thoughts of an “I” that can “influence” or an “I” that wants to know if it can control what happens in a dream … do you get the irony?

This is the dream character that wants to exert control to make things go its way. But where IS this entity, this character? You are dreaming. Can a dream-entity do anything? The dream is being watched by what you are … being, aware of all that is arising in this waking dream. Just watch. And see if you can locate the “one” who asks the question and see if that is a real thing or merely a wisp of thought!

I know it probably comes from some separate sense trying to control everything, but it keeps arising.

If it keeps arising, so what? It’s a thought-movement, just energy arising as movements of sound and silence, feeling-thinking… the only thing problematic is when this movement of energy is fixated on, taken to be “about me, “ and then resisted in some attempt to modify, correct, alter or fix it. There seems to be a notion that this is somehow indicating “something wrong.” But to whom does this energy arise? Is there a controller or is this also appearing as a “happening” … as part of the waking dream of isness?

There are kind of two parts of me I guess. One of them wants to control what is going on, and the other part is glad that it never has to be worried about controlling anything ever again.

Now THIS is TOTALLY FALSE! There is no “me” … and no “parts" of that nonexistent “me.” That is the still-extant belief in a separate controlling entity! Root that out through investigation! Where is this “me” that has “parts?” Where? Where is a me that either “wants to control” or wants to be unworried about being responsible for what it does and has and is in “its” life!? WHERE IS IT!?

You are and you know that you are. That I AM is known and totally certain. All else is false. Who or what believes any thought to be real and be pointing to any real object apart from the pure Subject-Awareness, that I AM which is your True Nature?? Hunt for that separate one and you’ll never find it.

If you are not the doer, then who is responsible for anything?

You answered the question that you asked! There IS No one. There IS no doer in the machinery! But do not take this as a new belief! Find out by LOOKING for that "doer" yourself, to see if you can locate such a thing!

What asks this? What wants to know? Stop look listen and BE.

"Consciousness is time bound." Consciousness - Being-Awareness, One-Without-A-Second ... can THAT ever actually be "time bound?" Impossible. There is an APPEARANCE of "time." Q: I have read where you answered awful obliquely to the straight question "when did Realization happen for you?" I want an honest, straight answer, dammit!

I can only answer a question that is based on a false premise with a false answer! This is the mind that believes there was a separate person and now wants to know when that person "became whole." That whole premise is bullshit. It's like believing in a flat earth.

So: The question assumes several assumptions of fact, but these alleged facts are devoid of proof, there is NO evidence, so the assertion of fact is discovered to be completely false in Truth: Assumption #1) There is an entity that was not realized and now is, and assumption #2) There is such a "thing" as "time." This is to mistake an appearance in a mirror for the real.

Relatively speaking, in the way Sri Nisargadatta answered this same question from a seeker, "I met my final teacher John Wheeler in 2004. In 2007 I realized my true nature as Presence-Awareness. But this is a RELATIVE understanding ONLY and has NO basis in FACT. I say that because on examination I find NO separate personal entity that could attain or not attain "realization."

The Absolute Truth is, there is no teacher, no student, no path, no attainment, no time, no separateness, all is One Essence, One-Without-A-Second.

So who gets enlightened or realized? And when? The question is unanswerable in Truth because the premise is false. The mind wants to know these things, but do these answers end the suffering? Not possible. All answers like this lead to more ignorance in a mind that now believes there is such a "thing" as "realization!"

Consider this from The Hsin Hsin Ming:

"All is empty, clear, self-illuminating, with no exertion of the mind's power. Here thought, feeling, knowledge and imagination are of no value."

Are you now believing in some conceptual chooser with volition that you learned in a seminar like est or Landmark!? If so then do this: "There is NO chooser, NO choice." Choose THAT. LOL ... LOOK! Who's that believer? The truth is there is NO you and no chooser. You are No Thing. You DO No Thing. You HAVE No Thing! Find this out: Where IS this "I" that believes it chooses? What controls the choosing or the chooser?

Where is your control? Where is any chooser apart from a series of thoughts arising in Awareness? Did you control that commenting? Where is the entity that is seeming (only seeming!) to exercise choices? The end of suffering consist in finding out that there has never been a chooser apart from Being Itself. You ARE. Stop wasting time and energy trying to be right about an "enlightened concept!" Do you want to be right or be free? Is that choice yours? Then exercise that choice and choose for the next two weeks to NEVER have a feeling or thought that makes suffering appear. Lots of luck on that one.

Obviously the entity making the decision makes the decision. it may be an unconscious decision though but hey...

What entity? Where IS any such actual separate entity!? You are and you know that you are. All else is a story that keeps you in imagination and there is suffering but only for an imaginary entity. Cut the nonsense and LOOK instead of trying to make your position on choosing and free will RIGHT and the Absolute Freedom that You already ARE will be seen, by no one. That is the Home you yearn for.

Freedom is another word for no one left to choose.

Now we are getting to the heart of the matter! And this is the point: Find out the source of your being "not okay." That "not okay-ness" IS suffering. Suffering ends when you try and fail to find a controlling entity called "me," and at the same (no) time see that you ARE, Being IS, and that is known. You are. Awareness, that is simple and real. All else is imagination ... the entity trying to control its life, and therefore suffering in effort and struggle, IS only imagination.

Where IS this "I" that believes it chooses? What controls the choosing or the chooser? Where is your control? Where is any chooser apart from a series of thoughts arising in Awareness? A Key to The Kingdom?

Are you suffering? Is there a tension, a resistance, to what simply IS? Have a look: Maybe the source of suffering is a belief in an "I" sense that is "in control." But does this "I" or sense of "me" that has innocently been accepted as what "you" are actually have 100% control over what thoughts arise, what feelings or emotional experiences come up, what happens in "its world?"

Perhaps the key to seeing that this "I" is a powerless concept is, try to control your thoughts and never have an unhappy thought or emotion for, say, two weeks. Then let us know how it went, and if you still believe that "you" are the "managing director of your life." For me, my gut-sense of "who I am" was "charles in charge!" Yet there was so much that didn't go my way that I finally had to look at that belief: "I'm in charge:" Is that TRUE? So see what you consider to be your gut-sense identity and challange that belief by giving it a 110% effort to "be in charge" in your life . . . at all times! Either you are 100% in charge or 0% in charge. It's not a "partial" thing. So get busy! Take 100% control for two weeks.

Try this right now for, say, two minutes: Are you doing it? How's it going? Anything coming up that you didn't cause!? Well, then, where IS this controller we call "me?"

And while all that is going on, just notice that the awareness of your being, present as the ever-knowing consciousness of "I am," has never gone away.

I Am. That is the home you never left ... and all that is, arises in that, and is not apart from That.

Hi Charlie, it seems now that the sense of an individual is less and less and what happens, simply happens. Things seem new and fresh and the sense of wanting to control or alter what is in anyway seems to be fading.

That is the natural eternal state being unconcealed, in a manner of speaking …now, just notice that this appearance of a seeming individual is also simply happening, and that too is not two! That too is happening. Where is any doer of that happening of an appearing belief in an individual controlling entity? Where is the doer of all the happenings? Can you find such?

In a way there is almost a resignation that this entity has no control anyway so why bother trying to control the uncontrollable. The looking for the person who was in control and the inability to find him was and is very helpful.

That resignation is a signal that there is still the subtle belief that there is a doer that can control even the not controlling (!) … The bothering or not bothering … and thereby do something as a doer to end the search. It’s very subtle.Interestingly enough a seeing of what I am not (i.e. a controlling entity) appears to be more effective here than a seeing of what I am.

That was also the case here. Ultimately, in my view there must be both sides of the non-dual coin to bring the search to an end: 1: Seeing that what you are Awareness, just That, the nonconceptual I AM, Being and only That. And, 2: If there is still any vestige of a subtle belief in a separate controller, a doer of all the doing, a director of the happening of livingness, then that needs to be got down to and seen to be absolutely and doubtlessly false. When the false is no longer believed only the True remains. The truth is in Being NOT Knowing. Only the non-conceptual imperceptible unseable unknowable, arising as the pointer to that in words, I KNOW THAT I AM. THAT I AM, alone (all one) is true. All else is imagination. And that imagination, the false entity-appearance taken to be real, survives as a seemingly separate thing apart from the whole only through beliefs that are not actually real!

The seeing of "what I am not" appears to allow the emergence of a subtle awareness that is in the background. The seeing of "what I am", still seems to generate a somebody looking for or trying to notice the spacelike awareness which feels a little contrived and effortful.

It appears that this pointer has done what it could to show the natural state. Now drop it! It might well seem contrived and ineffective once it’s done the work. Remember Ramana Maharshi’s pointer that these conceptual tools are like a thorn you use to remove another thorn imbedded in your foot. Once the thorn has done its job and the imbedded thorn has been dug out you discard both thorns. Like that throw away all the pointers and BE what You ARE … Awareness-Consciousness-Loving to BE ... just That! Nothing else!What also appears to be happening here is that the body is feeling a huge amount of unrest and tension. There is an understanding that there is no"I" that created this in the first place and no "I” that can do anything about it.

Full stop!

Now that this Understanding is clear, let’s move on to experiencing the Teachings rather than merely comprehending them.

However the body feels like a highly-strung coil that is about to snap. There is an urgency and unrest here that shows no sign of subsiding, If you had a comment on this I would be very interested in getting your thoughts on it?

Been there! Know the feeling! But what is there in you that wants that to be different and resists the appearance of that tension, urgency, unrest? That false doer, the apparent “entity” that wants to fix that or change that, is what is under investigation. Simply LOOK. Where is the one that wants to take control of the body? This energy is happening and that energy is appearing presently as a bundle of conceptual sense-feelings and then what arises is a wanting to control or fix that tension, that discomfort. But what is the experiencer of the discomfort? Where is that experiencer!? Is there any such? Or is what is happening simply this experiencing!?? Where is that “experiencer” in deep sleep? Yet the body lives on just fine without any doer, in deep sleep.

Where is the doer of the experiencing? Where is any doer? Can this doer actually be found? If it cannot be found can it actually be real? Or is this energy moving and the subtle identification as the doer OF that energetic happening still at play and not yet seen to be a chimera, a phantom, NOT solid and NOT in control of anything whatsoever?

Q: I was wondering if you could help me with some thinking that has been happening. If the mind cannot know the nondual Source, what can know?

An answer did bubble up in some detail, as you will read below. But I came back to the beginning because what occurred in the space here is to ask you first, why do you want to know these things? Let’s get down to it: Are you suffering? Will the answers to arcane abstract questions like this end your seeking and suffering? Who cares about this?

I enjoy these kinds of discussions but my main thrust here on my site and with my talks and videos is to point out directly what is causing suffering so you can root that sucker out and enjoy the rest of your life without suffering, living in the freedom of perfect peace and effortless ease.

So: ARE you suffering? Let’s get into that. Write back and tell me what the suffering is like for you. And we’ll delve into that. Meanwhile when you finish reading this e-mail, read (or re-read) the essay on the front page of the website, “The BASICS.” Read a few times. Read each time as though you never read it before. (You haven’t ever read it “before.” Each moment is new!)
Meanwhile here is what came up in response to your questions:

If the mind cannot know the nondual Source, what can know ?

Nothing can “know” the nondual Source, as there is nothing OUTSIDE That to “know” That. It IS “NONDUAL!” The idea that Source can be “known” is the mind’s attempt to turn Source into a thing, an object that is known. Source is neither subject nor object. To the mind it is No Thing. Source is space-like Awareness, empty, meaningless, unbounded, infinite … but all these words are absolutely insufficient to describe Source which is patently indescribable.

What the mind will try (and always fail) to do is to grasp the ungraspable. This goes on until it dawns on the seeker that the mind is, quite simply, the wrong tool for the job. The mind is a thing. Can a thing ever grasp NO thing? It’s akin to the eye trying to see itself. It’s hopeless!

Is this just another thing that is kind of self-evident always, or is knowing that you cannot know as far as that goes?

Yes, the Truth of your Being, that I AM that I am and that I AM that YOU are, is Self-Knowing Awareness. But this truth is NOT the words, concepts, thoughts. As Lao Tzu put it, “The Tao (Source) that can be named is NOT the Eternal Tao (Source.)

The I AM you know beyond doubt. And, anything else must end up in the beauty and silence of what I call “the gift of unknowing!” So it’s getting to the heart of this when it is seen by no one, seeing with N aked Awareness Itself, that all the mind can EVER say in Truth is, I don’t know.”

I guess what I am really trying to figure out is: what is realized when you realize the Self?

In a word? NOTHING.

What is “realized?” That there is nothing to realize. Nothing. This is seeing by no one that there never was a division in Source. You ARE what you seek. Already always awake here and now. The seeking seems to divide Source into a subject seeker and an object called self for it to realize. Enlightenment can be said to be the simple knowing that there is nothing to get and no one to get it.

But to the Ultimate Unknowable Source, these are all dead words that are empty and meaningless, and the word enlightenment or the words self-realization are pointing to MYTHS!
If you are interested in ending suffering and living in natural freedom, ponder this: What or who is this “I” that says “I am trying to figure this (un-figure-outable nondual Being) out?" The mind is machinery. You, when identified falsely as the mind-thinking-machinery, will endlessly ask questions like these and try to grab and own That, Source, which is OUTSIDE the mind! Seeing is happening. Seeing thoughts is happening. That is Consciousness, your knowing directly I AM before the thought arises that I am 'me,' is Presence, Awareness, arising as seeing without a seer, knowing without a knower, clarity without a subject or object.

The mind is a thought, “I” that as taken to be a solid separate thinking feeling controlling entity, “I apart from “Other,” then that thought-structure SEEMS to divide up totality. But can a thought do anything? Can a feeling/thought actually divide the Whole?

Do you actually come to know the Source of this I AM or is it just realized that you can never know, so the search gets called off and you get back to being?

What search? What Source? What being? Who would get back to that which has never been left? Being IS. Unknowable, That is the silence of deep sleep, pure Awareness before Consciousness arises as the knowing “I AM” and then is translated by Infinite Energy into the thought-form I AM “me.”

These are very good questions, it seems that you are on the precipice of this and I’d say, as John Wheeler once said to me, “get ready for a life free of suffering!”

Yet there was so much that didn't go my way that I finally had to look at that belief: "I'm in charge:" Is that TRUE? So see what you consider to be your gut-sense identity and challange that belief by giving it a 110% effort to "be in charge" in your life . . .

And while all that is going on, just notice that the awareness of your being, present as the ever-knowing consciousness of "I am," has never gone away.

Awareness is never lost nor found. IT IS. That is what you are ... the aware presence that sees thoughts, feelings, changes, happenings, effort and struggle, trying to control, trying to not control ... all is witnessed by that Awareness that you are.

So you are what you have been seeking.

Consciousness is all there is, and you are That.

It is enough if you do not imagine yourself to be the body. It is the "I am the body" idea that is so calamitous. It blinds you completely to your real nature. Even for a moment do not think that you are the body. Give yourself no name, no shape. In the darkness and the silence reality is found.

Q: When did you realize? A specific date please!

Again: Well: As a story (only) I met John Wheeler in late 2004 and “Sailor” Bob Adamson in 2005. It … the search … was essentially “done” by mid-2006. But that story ... and the storyteller ... are both false! This Natural State is NOT an attainment by or for a person... it is the absence of a person who needs to attain! Words fail, always.

Oh well... never mind. No matter.

Q: What is realization?

Realization is the disappearance of a seeker, which is the eternal natural state of absence of anyone to get realized.

As “Sailor” Bob Adamson puts it,

"Because awareness is self existing there is no effort needed or anyone who can make an effort to get it or lose it.’

As Tony Parsons puts this, "What disappears is the one who feels separate and needs not to. There’s only being. It can’t be conceived of. It can’t be described. It cannot even be known." Full Stop.

The whole misconception that keeps us firmly in the sense of being separate is the idea that we can do anything or the idea that we need to do anything. Why do we need to do anything? The state of identity is inherent in reality and never fades. But identity is neither the transient personality (vyakti), nor the karma-bound individuality (vyakta). It is what remains when all self-identification is given up as false - pure consciousness, the sense of being all there is, or could be. Consciousness is pure in the beginning and pure in the end; in between it gets contaminated by imagination which is at the root of creation. At all times consciousness remains the same. To know it as it is, is realization and timeless peace.
